# Grade 5 Math Tutor

In the fifth grade, students will develop their understanding of decimals and explore proportional reasoning with whole-number rates. The greatest indicator of student success is parental involvement so stay interested even though they are fairly independent learners by now. Keeping an eye on their progress will help you to recognize problems your child may be having with these vital building blocks in math.

Our one-on-one tutors work with the local curriculum. In the fifth grade, students must master not only important mathematical concepts, but also the following academic skills:

- Problem solving.
- Reasoning skills including pattern recognition, classification and the investigation of conjectures through discussion.
- Reflecting and monitoring their thinking i.e. by explaining to others why they think their solution is correct.
- Ability to use a variety of concrete, visual, and electronic learning tools and appropriate computational strategies to solve problems.
- To relate mathematical ideas and procedures to everyday contexts.
- Make basic representations of simple mathematical ideas.
- Communicate mathematical concepts orally, visually, and in writing.

#### Number Sense and Numeration

- Read, compare and order whole numbers and decimal numbers from 0.01 to 100 000
- Read and write in whole words numbers from 1-10,000
- Round decimal numbers to the nearest tenth
- Compare and order fractional amounts with like denominators, including proper and improper fractions and mixed numbers
- Understand the concept of equivalent fractions
- Read and write money amounts to $1000
- Addition, subtraction and multiplication of whole numbers and decimals
- Count forward by hundredths from any decimal number expressed to two decimal places
- Multiply two-digit whole numbers and decimal numbers by 10, 100, 1000, and 10 000, and divide decimal numbers by 10 and 100
- Divide three-digit whole numbers by one-digit whole numbers
- Understand simple multiplicative relationships involving whole-number rates

#### Data Management and Probability

- Collect data by conducting a survey or experiment, then organize and display data using charts and graphs, including stem-and-leaf plots and double bar graphs
- Read and interpret primary data and secondary data presented in charts and graphs, including stem-and-leaf plots and double bar graphs and draw conclusions
- Compare similarities and differences between two related sets of data, display the data in charts, tables, and graphs (including broken-line graphs) that have appropriate titles, labels (e.g. appropriate units marked on the axes) and scales that suit the range and distribution of the data
- Read, interpret, and draw conclusions from primary data and from secondary data
- Calculate the mean for a small set of data and use it to describe the shape of the data set across its range of values, using charts, tables, and graphs
- Compare similarities and differences between two related sets of data
- Determine and represent all the possible outcomes in a simple probability experiment, pose and solve probability problems and represent, using a common fraction, the probability that an event will occur in simple games and probability experiments

#### Measurement

- Estimate and measure time intervals to the nearest second
- Measure and record temperatures to determine temperature changes over time
- Estimate and measure the perimeter and area of regular and irregular polygons
- Choose a standard and measure length, height, width, and distance, and measure the perimeter of various polygons
- Convert meters to centimeters
- Measure the length and width of a rectangle and calculate area
- Understand and measure the capacity and volume of containers

#### Geometry and Spatial Sense

- Demonstrate an understanding of variables as unknown quantities represented by a letter or other symbol and determine the missing number through addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division and one- or two-digit numbers
- Distinguish between discrete data and continuous data using all numbers on a number line that fall within the range of the data
